沃特豪斯嘗試用本圖傳達(dá)某種中世紀(jì)的感覺(jué)，而他也的確做到了。富有裝飾性的畫(huà)面，還有一點(diǎn)宗教畫(huà)的味道。幾乎沒(méi)有現(xiàn)實(shí)主義和日常生活的痕跡。

宙斯創(chuàng)造潘多拉來(lái)摧毀人類(lèi)以報(bào)復(fù)普羅米修斯，赫菲斯托斯創(chuàng)造潘多拉的身體，雅典娜給與潘多拉衣飾，赫爾墨斯傳授潘多拉語(yǔ)言，阿弗洛狄忒賦予潘多拉魅力。然后，諸神皆給潘多拉一件施禍于人的禮物。
宙斯把潘多拉送給普羅米修斯的弟弟厄庇墨透斯，潘多拉打開(kāi)魔盒，疾病，災(zāi)禍，嫉妒，貪婪，……來(lái)到了人間，而潘多拉把希望這件唯一美好的禮物關(guān)在盒子里。

1899年布爾戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)在南非爆發(fā)，英國(guó)藝術(shù)家發(fā)起為英軍募捐的活動(dòng)，本圖即為此而作。
畫(huà)中的少女有如大理石雕塑般的美麗，她正飲酒為遠(yuǎn)征的士兵祝福，同時(shí)向遠(yuǎn)去的帆船投去同情的目光。
畫(huà)面具有意大利風(fēng)格和幾何學(xué)特征，圓鏡的弧形被拱門(mén)，頌經(jīng)臺(tái)及地球儀一次次的重復(fù)著。

阿多尼斯年輕俊美，是阿弗洛狄忒的戀人，他是忒伊亞和他的女兒亂倫的產(chǎn)物。
阿多尼斯后來(lái)死去，阿弗洛狄忒請(qǐng)求宙斯允許阿多尼斯半年時(shí)間呆在冥府，另半年時(shí)間與她在一起。
阿多尼斯的死亡與復(fù)蘇代表植物在冬天枯萎衰落，而在春天恢復(fù)生機(jī)。
